Facials in dermatology clinics: a much needed guide before getting one!

 FACIALS IN DERMATOLOGY CLINICS

As dermatologists we tend to keep up with various technologies to meet the upcoming aesthetic demands of our patients. one of the commonest among these are the Medi-facials. Medi facials basically involve usage of various peels, microdermabrasion, energy based devices (EBDs), lasers.

1. Chemical peels

It involves application of as acidic solution onto the skin so as to cause exfoliation & removal of dead skin cells. Various acids used can be ranged based on their potency, they include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acids etc. can be used in mild acne scars, hyperpigmentation, skin rejuvenation purposes.

2. Microdermabrasion

Also popularly known as skin polishing, it is a minimally invasive procedure done that removes the stratum corneum or outer cell layer of the skin. It is commonly done for mild acne scars, mild hyperpigmentation, and to improve the skin texture. The allows for new epidermal layer formation giving the skin a glow, but the procedure comes with a minimum downtime.

3. Carbon facial

Also known as hollywood facial, it is mostly a laser based procedure done after cleansing & exfoliation. Done for open pores, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone so as to to get that brighter glowing skin.

4. Hydrafacial

Has been a celebrity favourite for so long and has always been in the trends. It is a customisable procedure that involves hydradermabrasion device to cleanse, exfoliate & infuse your skin with serums.
This gives an excellent plumping, radiant look on the skin. Easy procedure with no downtime. I would recommend it before going to any events or parties.

5. Oxy facials

As the name suggest, it is basically delivering oxygen to your skin using a jet spray like device. Causes instant plumping effect on your skin, can also reduce fine lines.

6. Photo facial

It is used to treat sun damage and for skin rejuvenation, telangiectasias.  They are provided using a laser like IPL. However lasers how to be precisely calculated as per need so i strongly recommend to see a dermatologist for this one.

7. Vampire facial

Purely medical procedure. It involves using your blood to create platelet rich plasma and infusing it onto your skin with microneedling. As the name suggests it is a fountain of youth, to cause increase cell turnover, improve texture of skin. I strongly recommend to go see your dermatologist before this one as this can have a little downtime.

No matter how easy and fancy these procedures may sound, always try to consult a dermatologist for your procedure rather than opting for salons or spas.
